FAQs

What materials are used for the frames?
Our frames are made from cellulose acetate, a plant-based material made from wood pulp and cotton, used as an alternative to petroleum-based plastics.
Here is why it makes a great frame:
- Made from renewable plant fibers rather than crude oil.
- Color runs through the material instead of sitting on the surface, so it won't chip or peel.
- Warms slightly with body heat and settles to your face over time.
- A metal core runs through each temple for strength and easy adjustments.
-
What materials are used for the lenses?
Our lenses are polarized Tri-Acetate Cellulose (TAC), a lightweight multi-layer lens material.
Here is what that means for your eyes:
- Removes harsh surface glare to reduce eye strain.
- Clear, true-color vision.
- Lightweight for comfortable, all-day wear.
- 100% UV400 protection against UVA and UVB rays.
-
What type of hinges do you use?
Every frame uses a 5-barrel metal hinge, set into the acetate temple rather than molded out of the frame itself.
Here is what that means for you:
- Five interlocking metal barrels spread the load, so the arm opens firmly and stays aligned.
- Metal, not molded plastic. The pivot is a separate component seated into the acetate.
- It uses a standard screw, so it can be tightened with a small eyeglass screwdriver or by an optician.
- Built to be worn, not replaced.
-
What's the difference between acetate and cheaper plastics?
Acetate and cheap injection-molded plastics can look similar at first glance, but they feel very different.
The Key Differences
- Source Material: Cellulose acetate is made from plant-based wood pulp and cotton. Most cheap frames are petroleum-based plastic.
- Fit & Feel: Acetate warms slightly with body heat and settles to your face over time. Cheap molded plastic stays rigid.
- Color & Finish: Acetate's color runs through the material and can be polished back to a shine. Cheap plastics often use surface paint that can scratch, chip or fade.
- Weight & Strength: A thick acetate frame with a metal core feels solid and balanced in your hand instead of flimsy.
